Koi breeders, koi farmers, aquaculturists, exporters—these are all titles attributed to the dedicated men and women who form the core of Koi Waters. Representing an integral yet often overlooked part of Japanese history and culture, these professionals frequently escape the notice of broader governmental structures, including the National Diet in Tokyo.

In reality, koi farmers significantly contribute to Japan’s economy as major exporters. These enterprises range from sizable corporations to generational, family-owned businesses, each deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of Japanese culture and vital to the nation's identity. This brief pictorial introduction serves as a preview of the photojournalism Koi Waters will be providing in the future.

Beyond highlighting the breeders themselves, Koi Waters also emphasizes the beautiful koi ponds scattered across Japan and elsewhere, where their Nishikigoi live. Historically, Nishikigoi, or koi, were exclusively found within the ponds of Japanese gardens owned by emperors and nobles. Over time, these mesmerizing "Living Jewels," as koi are affectionately called, became admired by a broader spectrum of society. Enthusiasts began visiting Japanese gardens, museums, botanical gardens, and other locations featuring koi ponds, seeking to appreciate the masterful creations of Japanese koi breeders.

Today, koi travel has emerged as a specialized pursuit for enthusiasts looking to purchase Nishikigoi directly from breeders in Japan for their own ponds. Niigata Prefecture, particularly the city of Ojiya, is widely recognized as the birthplace of Nishikigoi and hosts the highest concentration of koi breeders. Nevertheless, informed enthusiasts understand that notable and successful koi breeders can be found throughout Japan. At Koi Waters, we aim to share the full experience of koi travel, highlighting opportunities to immerse oneself in Japanese culture beyond visiting breeders alone.

Welcome to Koi Waters. We invite you to discover Nishikigoi: Japan's koi culture, delve into specialized koi travel experiences, and marvel at the Japanese gardens that beautifully showcase these artistic fish. Immerse yourself in a deep dive into Japanese culture—a historic tradition that continues to resonate powerfully throughout modern society.
