Inside JR Central’s Private Shinkansen Cabins
Beginning October 1, 2026, select N700S trains will offer two enclosed rooms above Green Car level—with personalized comfort, onboard hospitality and a decidedly premium fare.
On the Tokaido Shinkansen, privacy has usually meant a quiet seat, a lowered voice and the courteous distance of strangers. Beginning October 1, it will mean a door.
Japan’s New Supreme Class Shinkansen is not a separate train. It is a new top-tier accommodation being introduced by Central Japan Railway—JR Central—and West Japan Railway on select 16-car N700S trains operating along the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen between Tokyo and Hakata. Each equipped train will initially carry only two private cabins. The Mainichi reports that their arrival marks the first return of private rooms to the Tokaido Shinkansen in 23 years.
A Room Within the Train
The larger cabin is in Car No. 7. It combines a reclining chair with a sofa and can accommodate up to two travelers. Car No. 10 contains a smaller cabin designed for one person.

Both are fully enclosed and fitted with electronic-locking doors. Passengers will unlock the cabin with the same registered IC card or QR code used to board the train, and the door will lock automatically. One practical detail is worth remembering: the seats do not rotate. Depending on the train’s direction, a passenger may spend the journey facing backward.
Inside, the cabin is designed around personal control. A tablet adjusts the seat recline, leg rest, lumbar support and seat heater. It also controls lighting, airflow and audio volume. Dedicated Supreme Class Wi-Fi, a headrest speaker, a large table, power outlets, USB-A and USB-C charging, a clothes hanger and space for an airline carry-on-size suitcase complete the room.
Small ornaments incorporating traditional crafts from regions along the route bring another layer to the design. It is modern Shinkansen technology, softened by wood, textiles and the quiet presence of regional workmanship.
Service Behind the Door
Passengers traveling in Supreme Class aboard Nozomi and Hikari trains will receive one welcome beverage and confection after boarding. Additional drinks and light foods can be ordered through the mobile-order service.

The products above are sold only on the Tokaido Shinkansen, between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.
JR Central’s announced examples include premium Japanese sake, green tea, fruit smoothies and Hokkaido scallops. These particular products are planned for the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka and may change with the season. Although Supreme Class cabins will also operate on some Kodama trains, the announced welcome and mobile-order services are limited to Nozomi and Hikari.
What Supreme Class Will Cost
JR Central lists the following SmartEX regular-season Nozomi fares per adult, one way. Express Reservation member prices are slightly lower.

The Car No. 7 figure requires careful reading. It is not an all-inclusive fare for two adults. The listed amount covers the passenger reserving the Supreme Class cabin. A second adult sharing the room must also hold a separate Shinkansen ticket valid for the same train, including the necessary basic fare and limited-express charge.
Published prices already include the booking passenger’s basic and limited-express fares. JR Central deducts ¥200 during off-peak periods, adds ¥200 during peak periods and adds ¥400 during designated super-peak periods.
Reservations and Availability
Reservations are scheduled to open through Express Reservation and SmartEX at 5:30 a.m. on September 15, 2026. Supreme Class will be a ticketless product: travelers will board using a registered transportation IC card or boarding QR code rather than collecting a paper ticket.
JR Central and JR West expect approximately 12 Supreme Class-equipped trains per day at the October launch, divided between Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama services. The October introduction covers the two enclosed cabins. A separate six-seat, semi-private Supreme Class Seat section is planned during fiscal year 2027.

Supreme Class is not simply a wider railway seat. It is an attempt to create stillness within movement: a door closing, the light lowered, a drink set down and Japan passing beyond the window at Shinkansen speed.
For the traveler who values silence, security and uninterrupted work—or who wants the journey itself to become part of the occasion—the new class offers something the Tokaido line has not provided in a generation: a room of one’s own.
