Japan has numerous abandoned shrines, or haikyo, as they’re referred to. Often found in rural areas and overgrown mountainsides, they are mostly the result of depopulation, modernization, or disaster. In some cases, funding by the local community has come to a halt.
Abandoned Oiwa Shrine, Southeast of Kyoto is the example I’ve shared here. Another well known haikyo is Fushimi Hakuseki Inari Shrine close to Yokosuka, Japan. These aren't all just the two most well known examples.
